Collisions . . .
And The Impact Of Blood On The Shelf!

At 6:00 a.m., on April 6, 2003, Tech. Sgt. Derrick Duncan learned the importance of regular blood donors. It took 60 units of blood products to save his life. Within 48 hours his emergency needs literally depleted the blood supply in Wichita Falls.

OBI was notified of the blood shortage and promptly sent more blood products to ensure that Derrick - and Wichita Falls - had the blood they needed.

Derrick, his son, and a family friend were setting out to enjoy a relaxing day off when the driver of an oncoming truck fell asleep, crossed the centerline and caused the collision.

Two broken legs. Lacerated liver. Punctured diaphragm. Ruptured colon. Collapsed lung filling with blood. Derrick, waiting for the Jaws Of Life to cut him free of the mangled metal, just kept thinking, "If I can make it to the hospital, I'm going to live."

Now he knows that blood has to make it to the hospital too -- everyday! If healthy blood donors don't take time to regularly replenish the blood supply, lives can not be saved.
