In her one year of life, Kaylee Rayburn experienced
more medical procedures and hospital stays than some people
do in a lifetime. Her medical testing and treatment began
when she was only two days old.
Eight days later, Kaylee was diagnosed with
Biliary Atresia- a condition of the liver that destroys bile
ducts in newborns. This condition was causing her bile to
flow into her bloodstream.
When Kaylee was only three weeks old, doctors
attached part of her intestine to her liver to create a tube,
in an attempt to reroute the bile. Yet this isn't always
effective, and on January 29, 2001, Kaylee had a liver transplant
at Integris Baptist Medical Center. Two weeks later, she
went into respiratory failure. But this survivor wasn't
about to be kept down- she bounced back.
Kaylee used three units of apheresis platelets,
three units of apheresis fresh frozen plasma and 17 units
of red blood cells. It took 23 generous donors to pull this
little girl through.
